ARC™, Accelerating Rate Calorimeter

The ARC is the world benchmark adiabatic calorimeter. It is focused on safety in handling, processing and storing of potentially hazardous materials.

The ARC provides realistic worst case simulations of exothermic runaway reactions. The ARC is an adiabatic calorimeter, meaning that during the run, no heat is exchanged between the sample and the surrounding environment. This allows for very accurate calculations of how much heat is released from a reaction that goes out of control, total pressure that builds up, as well as the temperature increase.
 
The ARC operates in a heat-wait-search mode. First the external heater brings the
temperature to a starting point, then the system checks if there is a beginning exothermal which can heat up the sample with more than 0.005 ºC/min. This is the detection threshold for defining an exothermal. If none is found, the system heats up to the next level, waits and searches for an exothermal, and so on. When an exothermal has been identified, the system follows the heat development in the system, until the reaction is over or until it has reached a pre-set temperature. The containment vessel is designed to handle 7 grams of exploding TNT. In case the sample explodes.

The ARC calculate time to Maximum Rate, time to explosion, maximum pressure etc. These parameters can be used to design the safety precautions and rules around a particular material or process.
